Homework #1

Quick Blog Question: I think lack of water is more important that water pollution because foul water can be purified and used to at least wash your hands as demonstrated in the textbook, but if there isn't enough water, it can't be used for anything at all.

ISAS #1: Jimmy did use water if he only drank packaged fruit juice because water was used to grow the fruit, which is an indirect water source.

ISAS #2: watering the wheat or grain to make the bread, washing the wheat or grain before baking the bread, and washing the pan the bread was baked in

ISAS #8: The world's total water has not changed over time because people can not just create water. Although, the way water is distributed over the world has changed, causing a shortage of water in certain places.

ISAS #9: oceans, river, glaciers, water vapor

ISAS #10: This quote means that there is alot of water in the world, but not everyone has acess to clean water or any water at all because of where they live. In Africa, for example, many people do not have acess to clean, fresh water that is safe for them to drink even though many other countries have acess to this.

ISAS #11: 77%

ISAS #12: glaciers and ice caps- 2.11%, lakes- 0.009%

ISAS #13: Because of the water cycle, it is possible that a person could drink water that was once swallowed by a dinosaur. After the dinosaur peed out the water, it could have been evaported into the air, then turned into rain that fell into a lake, and that water could have been purified to drink.

ISAS #17: The person who reported the 370 L of water used per day was probably reporting the direct water use, while the 4960 L of water was probably referring to the indirect water use or visa versa.

*questions from the chart on page 17*
1. east- steam/electric, south-steam/electric, midwest- steam/electric, west- irrigation/agriculture, alaska- mining, hawaii- irrigation/agriculture

2. In the east, water is used most for steam and electric use, while in the west, water is used most for agricultural use. Since many factories are located in the east, obviously their is the most electric and steam water use. Also, many taxis are in the East, especially new york city, which produce gas or steam. Many farms or orchards are in the west to produce crops and feed animals for food, explaining the mass water use in the area of agriculture.

3. east: economy- water is used alot for electric purposes to keep facorites running to produce products that can be sold to make money & to heat or cool down the facroties so the workers are comfortable. south-  economy- like the east, water is used for electric purposes to keep facroties running and to produce products that can be sold for a profit. midwest- Again, water is used for steam and electric reason to help the economy by keeping factories running and creating products that can be sold to make money. west-  water is mainly used in the west for agriculture for economical reasons. Growing food benefits the economy because the food can be sold. Alot of water is used for agriculture in this region also for the reasons of weather, because since it is typically very hot during summers in the west, more water is needed to feed crops and livestock so they don't die. Alaska-  Most water is used for mining which benefits the economy because the items miniers dig up can be sold. It also contributes to culture, because Alaska has been a mining state for many years and it is almost a tradition for people to be miners in Alaska. Hawaii-  Most water is used for irrigation or agricultre in Hawaii for reasons of weather. Hawaii is very hot in the summer and plants can dry up and not be fertile and ready to sell, which also leads to economy. Healthy plants help economy because they can then be sold for a major profit.
